Between 10-16 May at Exchange Dublin, we will enjoy feature and short films to talk about urban architecture, and to re-produce Dublin through filming. As a Dubliner, or an outsider to the city, you will make a film in and about Dublin within the theme of PERIPHERIES. This is open to all, and film experience is not required. To sign up, please email Rachel McAree at education@architecturefoundation.ie.Gul Kacmaz Erkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01186327398619944370noreply@blogger.comBlogger21125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4955167828156391444.post-15801008236163687692011-05-18T14:23:00.000-07:002011-05-18T14:37:48.301-07:0016 May 11 . seventh day . the finaleThe final day of the workshop started at 1.45 at the Filmbase. Everybody finalized their films, and gathered them on Sinead's laptop we would use for screening. We tested the projector and the sound system, and left. We met again at around 6 to set up a table for the food and the drinks for the guests, who started to show up shortly after 6.30. We started the show at 7.15. Each film was reviewed right after the screening. The participants got the chance to talk about their piece, and to get feedback from Harvey O'Brien, Kathleen James, Paddy Breathnach, and Samantha Martin who were our reviewers. If ‘the medium is the message’, filming architecture deserves exploration. Film makes use of design variables such as light, colour, movement, texture, pattern, scale and transparency as a significant aspect of its narration. Form, space, time, nature, sound, text, fabric and other design elements are all included in the core of a film. So how can we benefit from filmmaking to express our ideas on architecture and the city? With this question in mind, we will view and discuss feature and short films about urban architecture, and re‐produce Dublin through filming. Doing so, we intend to develop an awareness of the relationship between the city/architecture and cinema.

The target of the workshop is to make a short film within the boundaries of the city. As a Dubliner, or an outsider to the city, you will be making a film in and about Dublin within the theme of PERIPHERIES. The theme may include concepts such as urban network, context, territory, centre, margin, border, edge, transition, transformation, proximity, and intimacy, which we will be talking about throughout the workshop in relation to the films screened and produced. In this workshop, theory and practice are brought together. A theoretical basis on the relationship of film and urban architecture will be provided ‐not by the tutor through lectures but by the participants through discussion. We will explore the world of cinema to portray our ideas about cities and the built environment. The participants are expected to familiarise themselves with the software of their choice before the workshop.

Participants are also encouraged to submit their films to the Peripheries conference at Queen’s University Belfast (www.qub.ac.uk/sites/Peripheries2011Conference). There were not many of us but we had a great day brainstorming for and shooting a short film with a narrative. The working title is Chase. Ronan is the director, and Gul is the assistant director. Pierre is the actor -yes, he is back!- and Ashling, a friend of Ronan who came all the way from Galway, is the actress. We really had a lot of fun experimenting with the story and the camera as we go. We had to stop for a while when we ran out of batteries and were all over the building to find new ones. We got footage everywhere in Richview - the library, the quad, studios, staircases... The best part is Ronan and Pierre will do the editing separately using the same footage, and we will have two versions of the film in the end. Thank you Ronan for your enthusiasm and happy birthday!
Gul Kacmaz Erkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01186327398619944370noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4955167828156391444.post-27426102105809845152010-07-19T07:04:00.001-07:002010-07-19T07:10:16.625-07:00screening/review

Gul Kacmaz Erkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01186327398619944370noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4955167828156391444.post-32064602360006434012010-07-19T04:24:00.000-07:002010-08-16T14:46:26.332-07:0016 July 10 . the fifth day - the final
The final day of the workshop started early. Everybody finalized their films, and gathered them on the laptop we would use for screening. Paddy worked hard to burn DVDs with all our films, which is still a work-in-progress. After eating our yummy sandwiches for the last time, we set up a table for the food and the drinks for the guests, who started to show up shortly after 1.30. We started the show at 2.15. Each film was reviewed right after the screening. The participants got the chance to get feedback not only from Hugh Campbell and Kevin Donovan who were our official reviewers but also the audience who were mainly UCD Architecture staff and students. We are grateful to our reviewers and everyone who came. We asked everyone to nominate the best three films for our 'Oscar'. We got some bad news. Pierre unfortunately had a bike accident. He is in the hospital right now but he will be fine. This picture of him is from yesterday.

Today Francis showed some basics of editing to some of the participants. Then we watched each group's raw material for about 5 minutes and came up with suggestions to improve the project. Since that we saw some actual footage today, we were able to say more about how to put different pieces together. We talked a lot about editing, superimposition of frames and sound/music. It is amazing to see that everybody has a different Dublin. Some groups have enough material and others will continue shooting tonight.

Tomorrow is the post-production day. We will meet in the Red Room at 12 and help each other during the editing process. Friday is the big day.

Gul Kacmaz Erkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01186327398619944370noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4955167828156391444.post-26199692151233421562010-07-13T09:28:00.001-07:002010-07-15T03:27:07.363-07:00concept/storyboard discussion<img style="cursor: pointer; In the morning we screened and talked about the 3 minute clips that the participants brought in. We looked at 15 clips: Eraserhead, Moving through the Night, Salary Man, Alphaville, Caro Diario, Non-places, Ascension, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Synecdoche New York, Vanessa Bruno ad, Wings of Desire, H is for House, The Conversation, Manufactured Landscapes, and Public Housing. More people talked and people talked more today either because it was the second day or the clips were more interesting. Some of the clips were what I call city films of Tokyo, Berlin, New York, etc.

After eating Daragh's delicious wraps, we pinned up and looked at the concept boards and the storyboards of all 10 groups. (Most people work in pairs.) We tried to come up with ideas which would improve the proposals. This was also an opportunity to talk about how we saw Dublin and how we would frame the city through film. Dublin has been in the center of the discussions since yesterday, together with the theme, temporal movement.

We decided to meet at 1.30 rather than 10 tomorrow so that the groups have more time for shooting. Fingers crossed for good weather. We screened and discussed clips from Dogville, West Side Story, The Battleship Potemkin, The Belly of an Architect, City of God, Dark City, Chunking Express, Hic and THX 1138. We talked about the portrayal of cities and buildings in film. The discussion was mainly on media, representation, space, perception, movement and time. The participants decided who to work with. We also enjoyed Daragh's sandwiches from Good Gourmet Cafe.

The homework for tomorrow is to come up with an A3 Concept Board describing the theme of the film proposal, a theme derived from the workshop theme, which is temporal movement. They will also do the storyboard of their film proposal as a group.

Everybody is invited to the screening/review of workshop films on Friday at 2. We will be in the Red Room.

I would like to thank Hugh Campbell, Alice Clancy, Pierre Jolivet, and Sandra Conroy of UCD for their support and help.

<input id="gwProxy" If ‘the medium is the message’, filming architecture and the city deserves exploration. Film makes use of design variables such as color, light, movement, pattern, texture, scale and transparency as a significant aspect of its narration. Form, space, time, nature, sound, text, fabric and other design elements are all included in the core of a film. So how can we benefit from filmmaking to express our ideas on architecture and the city? With this question in mind, we will benefit from fiction films to talk about urban architecture, and to re-produce Dublin through filming. Doing so, we intend to develop an awareness of the relationship between city/architecture and cinema.

As a Dubliner, or an outsider to the city, you will be making a film in and about Dublin within the theme of TEMPORAL MOVEMENT. The theme may include sub-themes such as history, story, change, transformation, mobility, and spatial movement, which we will be talking about throughout the workshop in relation to the films screened and produced.

We will explore the world of cinema to portray our ideas about cities and the built environment. The participants are expected to familiarize themselves with the software of their choice before the workshop. More information about film format will be provided.

The workshop starts on Monday at 10 with the screening of film extracts, and their discussion in terms of their architectural and urban qualities. The workshop includes but is not limited to extracts from Robbins’ West Side Story (1961), Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (1971), Kar-Wai’s Chung King Express (1994), Proyas’ Dark City (1998), Meirelles‘ City of God (2002), and von Trier’s Dogville (2003). Basic reading on the subject will be provided for theoretical basis. The participants of the workshop, then, form into groups of one to three people, and each group selects an architectural/urban theme which is derived from one of the films. The group theme will be related to ‘temporal movement’, the main theme of the workshop. The themes will be revealed through the representation of the city of Dublin in short films. On Monday afternoon, the participants explore the city center (on their own), and sketch for the (A3) concept board and (A3) storyboard of their film.
